UK Government Drives AI and Digital Transformation in Social Care

The government’s approach goes beyond digitizing records. New AI-driven technologies are being introduced to revolutionize care delivery. For example, sensor-based monitoring systems and AI-powered fall detection aim to prevent injuries among older individuals, reducing hospital admissions and improving quality of life.

By March 2024, the government aims to ensure that 20 percent of care home residents at high risk of falls are protected by AI-driven monitoring. This milestone supports earlier interventions and more effective management of chronic conditions.

Investment in AI and Digital Technology

In addition to the £150 million for digital health and social care, the government has allocated a further £3 million through the Adult Social Care Technology Fund. This fund supports projects using AI and digital innovation to improve medication management, virtual care, and remote monitoring.

One example is Shropshire Council, which received £1.2 million to integrate AI technology into homes to support virtual care services. These digital solutions allow for real-time assessments and interventions, giving elderly individuals greater independence while ensuring timely support.
